Format and Timeline

The competition takes place in two rounds.
Round 1: Your Best Practices
Closing deadline: 6:00pm, August 22, 2014
Participants are required to complete the entry form and describe their best practices in detail. Only 1 Best Practice Competition entry per organization is allowed.
A panel of judges will assess the entries by September 10, 2014 and notify the top 50 entries that reach the required standard to progress to Round 2 using online voting.
Round 2: Online Voting (Qualifiers)
Voting period: September 17-October 7, 2014
Qualified entries will be published on Alibaba.com and open for voting by Alibaba.com members.
The final top 3 entries will be assessed by a panel of judges. This will include, votes gained from the online voting system.
The top 3 winners for the Best Practice Competition will be announced on October 15, 2014.

We have been operating in this business for over two decades. I have been into manufacturing, trading and the distribution business for over a decade, and I have been very successful with it. Having established the business in 1944, Atom Machinery Mfg. Co. specialises in the manufacturing, re-selling and the trading of machinery used to manufacture products including laundry soap, toilet soap, detergent soap, detergent powder, coconut peelers, fruit and vegetable cutters, slicers and hair clippers.

The company was started as a family business by an entrepreneur, Shri Chhaganlal Chudasama, who later handed the business to his sons-they were eventually made the company chairmen and holders.

My grandpa had successfully sent his first order for export in 1957, and after that, the company had started exporting many products. Because of this, we were confident enough to export more of our products; however, the number of inquiries we received was not enough for us. In 2002, I worked at the Hong Kong Trade representative office in Ho Chi Minh city, Vietnam for a year where I was involved in the commodity and chemical import business.

I knew Alibaba.com from the work I carried out at my college in another agricultural business. During those days back in 2002, the internet connection was not so advanced compared to nowadays.

Our office nowadays is located in the Saigon Trade Center, the most modern and highest office building in the city. Even though I’m very proud to be able to work there, we still had some infrastructural and technical problems. These included having to access the internet via the dial up through the fixed phone line, which was very slow - sometimes the connection was so bad that we would get cut off.

I recall a time when it took me almost 30 minutes to send an email without any attachment. Thankfully, while surfing the internet I came across Alibaba.com.

I decided to become a free member on Alibaba.com. We were amazed at the high number of inquiries we had started to get via Alibaba.com, with many of them being serious inquiries; while some were spam.

Some time ago, I was sent on a short one-week business trip to China. That was the first time I had been abroad. I was taken aback by the enormous infrastructure and the development of major Chinese cities, such as Quangzhou, Fuzhou, Hangzhou, Ningbo and Beijing.

I had the chance to meet up with a friend of mine, who is a supplier based in Wenzhou who is also an engineer with Alibaba.com. We had some free time to chat over some things, business and personal related.

My China trip opened my eyes. I saw lots of young Chinese people who were eager to learn and add value to their economy, as well as become rich. Something peculiar crossed my eyes. I saw a beautiful Chinese bamboo forest in the cold weather. There are no such types of tress in Vietnam, so this is why I was fascinated. That image has stuck in my mind until now.

I saw that China had become dynamic. I saw young Chinese people start their own businesses and some of them had started their businesses after just graduating from university. We have never experienced this in Vietnam. In Vietnam, under a state education system, after graduating from university, people usually go and work for the local government or find jobs in the private sector. For a new graduate to start their business is almost unheard of in Vietnam.

I came back to Ho Chi Minh City with many thoughts in my mind. The one thought that kept coming back again and again was how to build up my own business using few resources, few working relations and a limited budget. I must have spent around a year to do research and think carefully about this. At the same time I was busy renovating my house. I asked an architect to design the car park and the office home for me.

An Idea is Born

In 2005, my wife had an inspirational idea about making it easier to clean bras using washing machines without losing the quality of the fabric. Initially, I had no clue as to how to kick-start the project and had no knowledge about the processes involved to make the business a success.

Then, with the business advice I had got from my wife, we started by carrying out thorough research to understand the needs and requirements of our potential customers. The majority of the research revolved around what was already available in the market and if there was a need for a similar product or not.

As part of the research, we carried out a comprehensive survey to gather opinions from over 10,000 women located in seven of Turkey’s biggest cities.

The results of the survey proved to be positive and revealed that around 89% of the women were interested in using our product. This provided a real boost to our moral because prior to 2006 Google Turkey’s search engine did not contain keyword entries such as ‘bra saving’ or ‘bra washing’, in Turkish or English. So therefore, we were very pleased at the time to be the only people to implement these keywords into Google Turkey’s search engine. Around this time, after brainstorming a few ideas, we decided to give our product a unique name -- BraGuard.

Testing Phase

After obtaining our survey results, we decided to perform a few tests on a dummy version of the product to see if it would work or not.

For the test procedure, we used a couple of bra molds made from gypsum, plastic sheets and an iron to glue the plastic sheets together. The process involved pushing the melted plastic sheet onto a gypsum bra mold before drilling the surface to see if there will be any dents or marks left afterwards. The first set of performance tests were completed using home-made prototypes and proved to be very promising.

Once we had started getting positive results from our test procedures, we were in a good position to begin searching for potential investors. Despite coming across some reputable companies who manufactured bras, sadly we could not find a suitable investor for our business.

This phrase certainly came true our way when we decided to invest our personal savings in order to start the company instead of waiting for an external investor. Yes, without a doubt it was a risky move for us. Nevertheless, we were determined not to give up, especially after we had got the positive results from the survey and the product tests.

The biggest joy for me was to see my wife become the owner of the company and for my two daughters to become shareholders in the business. It gave me a lot of emotional strength and confidence to see that the whole family was involved in the business. It was at this stage that we decided to send an application to the Turkish Patent Institute for our idea to be patented with the model and trade mark registrations. We did this so that we could protect our brand and product idea.

Production Starts

To get the ball rolling, we made an agreement in writing with an industrial design company to start making model drawings of the first prototype. The materials used to make the sample were also ordered; these included a polyamide prototype and injection molds according to the revised prototype. The body was injected using transparent polypropylene.

In the meantime, we started designing and building the product’s packaging, our official company website and the sales presentation video.

Social Responsibility

When we received the first set of test products for the BraGuard, we arranged a meeting with The Breast Foundation of Turkey.

We agreed the following terms and conditions with them:

1. We would provide a magnetic badge that warns women about breast cancer and also displays the catchphrase: ‘Mammography Saves Lives’. The magnetic badge can be displayed on a fridge, in the office, or a car etc.
2. We will embed the foundation’s logo on our website and include a link to their website.
3. They would apply our logo and mention our link on their web pages as well.
4. We would pay US $0.25 to the foundation for every product that was sold in Turkey.

We wanted to raise awareness about breast cancer and we hoped that we would raise some financial contribution for the Turkish Breast Cancer Foundation. We are proud to carry on this initiative by sending the magnetic badges in the product boxes to each of our clients.

Global Expansion

Not long after we had begun to sell our products on our website in 2007, we had started to see a healthy return on investment. In subsequent years, we grew our product portfolio to manufacture and supply various kinds of bags, kitchenware and many other products. Established in 1972, HandViet is a Vietnamese manufacturer and exporter of handicraft fine arts made from natural bamboo. We have known Alibaba.com since 2004. We went to Germany for Ambiente, an international exhibition for living, dining and gift products.
